“I am dedicated to hearing the details of your truth, your history, your journey.”
Hello, I’m Katie Pugh. I’m the Functional Nutrition Alliance (FxNA) Intake Specialist, and I’m passionate about nutrition and supporting people in the path toward living a life in harmony and partnership with the body. With medical knowledge in addition to wellness and life coaching experience, I help clients feel comfortable sharing details of their medical and life histories, experiences and symptoms.
I had been blessed with simple health issues for most of my life, but several years ago I had my first personal experience with chronic pain. I was exhausted, emotionally drained, physically suffering and unable to function well. Doctors and specialists crossed off one disease at a time and finally scratched their heads, saying, “Come back in six months and we’ll see if anything new shows up.”
In both my career and my personal life, I have frequently heard about people having their truth—about their pain, symptoms, or life experiences—dismissed, not trusted, or not taken seriously. So many times I have heard a patient say something like, “I feel exhausted all the time, but three specialists can’t find anything wrong with me. They said it’s just my age, hormones, emotions…”
So there I was, feeling terrible, but now wondering if they were right. Is there anything that will help? Do I have to live with this the rest of my life? I had nearly lost hope when a colleague told me about the functional approach to medicine and nutrition. I was hesitant to open up again, wondering why this would be any different than the last time. I crossed my fingers and jumped.
And it was different. As I spoke, every experience I had had was honored; every word I shared was treated like a clue to help direct us toward a solution. I felt a twinkle of hope. With a little trial and error, as is so often the case, the pain turned off like a light switch. I have felt indebted and committed to functional medicine ever since.
It was my passion for this approach that lead me to follow Andrea’s work. I’ve had a dream of working by her side and putting my beliefs into practice since I first found my way to her. I’m thrilled to now be a part of the FxNA team and to be the front door to our counseling processes.
Like Andrea and the rest of the team at FxNA, I use the tools of functional nutrition to become an investigator, dedicated to hearing the details of your truth, your history, your journey. I have endless curiosity about clients’ lives and health histories, and my ears especially perk up when someone starts a sentence with “I don’t know if this is related but…” The answer is IT IS. I believe it’s all part of what makes you YOU, with your unique physiology and collection of life experiences.
I graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2005 and after almost 5 years in private practice, chose to go a different direction. So while not practicing as a Naturopathic Doctor with FxNA, I do bring my education and experience to our nutrition team discussions and to each history-gathering session with clients. Additionally, I have completed the Wellcoaches Wellness Coach Training Program as well as a spiritual life coaching program. With my long-term passion for nutrition, you can often find me in the kitchen experimenting with healthy baking or remaking old family favorites into new, healthy versions. Being a true Northwestern girl, I walk the local trails with my family, rain or shine.
